Discussion:
Weird Issue with Infomaker 11.5 performance in Table Layout view.

We upgraded from Infomaker 8 to 11.5 recently. Now we are seeing this weird
issue with performace that seems to be permissions related.

If we connect to the database as an admin, there is no problem. If we
connect to the database as a user that has SELECT permissions to the tables
used in a report, when editing the report, the tables draw on the screen
VERY SLOWLY in the Table Layout view.

To duplicate the problem, we open a report that has multiple tables. When
we click on the "Data Source" button to view the Table Layout, the tables
will paint taking a few seconds for each table. Then I disconnect from the
database, and reconnect as an admin and the Table Layout is very quick.

Does anyone have any idea? We are using SQL Server 2005 with SP3.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill;

How are you connecting to SS2005 in IM 11.5 - that is to say what DB
connection mechanism are you using now vs in PB 8?

Hmm .. you can certainly try the SNC option - but, I am at a loss to explain
the difference in time via the ODBC link.

The SNC option didn't really work because it was developed with the other
driver I suppose. Here's the odd thing. Today, the Table Layout painting
of the tables is fairly quick to update no matter who is connecting to the
database. The whole thing doesn't make any sense. The report runs fine as
far as pulling the data and did so yesterday as well.

Sounds like maybe your network or DBA staff may be changing some things

I AM the dba staff. Nothing has changed, but the slow problem with the
Table Layout is back today. I've asked our network guys and they say
nothing has changed, but who knows. I have a guy at another college that
works with the same Student Information System and they say they see similar
problems since upgrading to Infomaker 11.5. We both upgraded from 8 to 11.5
over the summer and didn't see these issues with 8.0.

Ran an ODBC trace on the connection when pulling the Table Layout. It looks
like when it's pulling the column information for the tables when logged on
as a general user, it takes a lot longer to retrieve the columns than when
logged on as administrator.

There is no table fragmentation to speak of, or anything running on the
server hogging resources.

According to the release notes for the 11.5.1 EBF 4566:

17123 579422 Customer is in Infomaker 11.5. He has datawindows
(reports) that now take a very long time to open
the SQL Painter (Clicking DataSource). Some
reports take minutes before the SQL appears. In
PB 9.0.3 it displays the SQL very quickly
connected to the exact same database and opening
the same report. Why is this taking so long now?
Can something be fixed in 11.5 to make this
quicker? The database is SQL Anywhere 11 and ODBC
is used to connect. July 17, 2009: Verified fixed
in PB 11.5.1 build 4556 and after.

We have been at build 4011 for about a month. We are still
experiencing this issue at times. Currently, the table
layout view is painting VERY SLOWLY. Also, while changing
to the SQL Native Client seemed to help for a while, that
was short lived and may have been a coincidence.

Thanks
